The Ohio House of Representatives has given its approval to the Strategic Community Investment Fund, a historic initiative aimed at supporting statewide, regional, and local projects. State Rep. Don Jones, who represents Freeport, made the announcement of the passage of Substitute House Bill 2.

The Strategic Community Investment Fund, which amounts to $350 million, was established as part of the state's main operating budget for the year 2023. The fund includes excess funding from the previous fiscal year and will be used to address various needs within communities across Ohio.

Representative Jones expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the people in his district. He stated, "I want the people of the district to feel safe and secure where they live." He also emphasized the importance of investing in local county fairs to foster a sense of hometown pride.

Thanks to careful fiscal stewardship, Representative Jones was able to secure one-time funding for a range of projects. These include $500,000 for the establishment of the Tribe Athletic Complex (TAC) Track, which will enhance accessibility and community engagement. Additionally, $1 million will be allocated to rejuvenate the Harrison County Fair, with plans to replace the Grandstand, restrooms, and the 4-H building, among other improvements.

Other projects to receive funding include a new fire station for the Belmont Fire Department, the revitalization of the Sargus Center, support for the construction of a Regional Safety Center, and the provision of a new space for the Jewett Volunteer Fire Department. The funds will also be used to purchase personal protective equipment for firefighters.

Substitute House Bill 2 also includes significant statewide capital investments. These include $600 million for the School Building Program Assistance Fund, $400 million for the Public Works Commission Local Public Infrastructure and State Capital Improvement Program, and $397.6 million for higher education projects across the state. Additionally, $250 million has been allocated for local jail construction in Ohio.

These investments will be integrated into the State Capital Budget bill, a two-year construction budget for capital projects. The aim is to provide much-needed funding for various initiatives that will benefit communities throughout Ohio.

The passage of the Strategic Community Investment Fund reflects a commitment to the well-being and development of Ohio's communities. It is an important step towards ensuring that resources are allocated where they are most needed and will have the greatest impact. With these funds, local projects can be realized, enhancing the quality of life for residents and fostering a sense of pride and security.
